Belogradchik Rocks Geology
Most notably, the remarkable Belogradchik Rocks represent a combination of conglomerate and sandstone. Furthermore, long-term erosion has created incredible shapes out of the rocks.
This includes tall columns and smallvalleys with steeply vertical slopes. All of this began during the Permian Period, about 230 mmillion years ago. The same process also formed the surrounding mountain range.
Later, the region was the floor of a small, shallow sea. This served as the source of much of the material the formation is comprised of today.
Belogradchik Rocks Location and Geography
The magnificent Belogradchik Rocks formed in what now constitutes the country of Bulgaria, in Europe. Further, the impressive structures appear on a small portion of the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains.
In color, the various formations display a rather wide range of colors. However, these primarily consist or shades of red, yellow, and black.
But their impressiveness is not restricted to appearance alone. Heights vary, of course, yet some of them stand as tall as 656 ft (200 m). Add this to the presence of steep valleys between them and the effect is remarkable.
In total, the formations cover an area measuring roughly 19 sq mi (50 sq km). Finally, the formations actually appear in five groupings. The largest sits near the town of Belogradchik, hence the name.
